BSOD Or Blue Screen of Death

It is Monday morning; it is going to be a busy day. You try to open some files that are located on your business server, there is an error - 'An error occurred while reconnecting to H: to //youserver/youruserid/docs blah, blah, blah, The connection has not been restored'

You go to the server and on the monitor is:

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop 0X000000D1 (0X000000004,0X0000000b3,0X000000000,0XC551198A) **ITNLS.SYS - Address C551198A Base At B23FE0A0, Datestamp 44E7CF40

So what does this mean? It means that the driver ITNLS.SYS either is corrupt or the hardware at memory address C551198A has failed.

To find out if the driver has failed you could do a search for the ITNLS.SYS on the internet. Or go to Microsoft Tech Net and do a search for the Driver_IRQL_ stop error. Your best bet would be to search for the Stop 0X000000D1 error. Once you have found the fix or resolution you now need to apply it.

What if it isn't the driver but hardware? Well the code will tell you that the error is at a memory address. You can contact your vendor for a new part and if under warranty it may not cost you anything.

But if it is the driver to apply the fix you need to get the system to start, this could be either through the 'Safe Mode' or some other boot Operating System such as with BartPE http://www.diy-computer-repair.com/bartpe-software-review.html

Now you have applied the fix, you start the server and you get the log on screen.

Or did you, what if you didn't find the fix, or worse yet the fix caused a new stop error, still at a BSOD?

You have two choices.

If you have the expertise you could get the memory dump file from the BSOD server and do a search for the stop error and decode what is causing it by using the Microsoft provided debugging tool located here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

Or if you have the funds you can contact Microsoft Support and open a support ticket, of course this costs money, depending on how long it takes the MS tech to find the problem then suggest a fix.

Either way your server is going to be down for sometime, do you have a backup ready to take up the slack?
